Brett Carrillo Duffy descended from both the Historic Carrillo family
of California and Spain, and the Adams family of Revolutionary
America. Brett Carrillo Duffy lives in Pacific Palisades, California
where he has resided for the past thirteen years.
Mr Duffy's great-great Grandfather was James Nelson Dowling, a direct
descendant of John Adams while his great-great Grandmother was Clara
Dowling. Brett has traced his lineage to the Carrillo family. The
historic Carrillo family was first recognized in 1589 in Spain when
they helped finance the exploration of the Straits of Magellan.
Mr. Duffy's great-great-great-great-great Grandparents were married
in the Carmel Mission in 1781 by Father Junipero Serra. The
bridegroom, Jose Raimundo Carrillo, had come with Father Serra to San
Diego in 1769 when the Spanish crown ordered the establishment of the
Catholic Missions.
Over the years the Carrillo's flourished. A son of Jose Raimundo was
a delegate to the Monterey convention that was to lead to California's
admission to the United States in 1850. The family acquired much of
Monterey, Santa Barbara and Coronado Island. They also acquired
thousands of acres East and West of Sepulveda Blvd. which they loaned
to the Government for the use of Veterans where the Veterans Hospital
and Cemetery now stand.
Mr. Duffy's great-great Uncle was Leo Carrillo who was born in
1882. Leo Carrillo became very famous in his Vaudeville acts
performing with William S. Hart, Tom Mix, Buster Keaton and Duncan
Reynaldo. He also became a famous radio personality performing before
World War II in such shows as Cisco Kid and Pancho Villa.
